Great Expectations for Giants RB David Wilson

ROOKIE RBs ARE NOT STARTERS ON THE GIANTS

By Steve Monty

Its hilarious. Every year another idiot sportswriter gets the fan base all excited because we drafted the next coming of Walter Peyton or Gale Sayers. Last year it was D'arel Scott, this year David Wilson. The fact of the matter is the Giants DO NOT give the ball to rookies! Period!

Just look at the history of the team. Bradshaw toiled behind Jacobs and Ward for 3 years before he was installed as the #1 back. Jacobs was an understudy to Tiki Barber for 2 years. Barber played behind Tyrone Wheatly, Gary Brown, Joe Montgomery and even freakin Ron Dayne for 4 years before he broke out as the #1 option. Rodney Hamption sat behind Otis Anderson before he got his shot.

Based on the teams track record, I would find it much more believable that the Giants rushing rotation this coming season will be Bradshaw/Ware/Scott especially if Wilson fumbles once or twice in the pre-season. And frankly I thought this past season that DJ Ward was starting to break out a little.

I believe Wilson will have a fine season. But he needs to learn the offense, learn to block and earn his stripes on special teams before he's installed as the #1 option at halfback! Take it to the bank!

WILSON TO BE NUMBER TWO ON GIANTS' RB DEPTH CHART

By Eeeeeeeeegs

I seem to remember Steve Smith, Kevin Boss and Ahmad Bradshaw doing some interesting things in Super Bowl XLII. Aaron Ross, Michael Johnson (two huge plays @ GB) and Jay Alford (sack in SB) were also rookies who contributed big time. I just mentioned six rookies who contributed in 2007-2008. Hixon was returning kickoffs, as well. There's seven. There are only seven rounds in the NFL draft. It's hard to have more than seven rookies contributing in the same season. A Super Bowl season, I might add.

You draft talent. You evaluate that talent. Then you figure out which of your 53 players is most capable of helping you win. There is no "rookie" formula.

That blogger references Ahmad Bradshaw not getting reps his rookie year. It's not because he was a rookie. It's because he had #27 (Jacobs) and #34 (Ward) ahead of him on the depth chart. When Ward broke his leg in 2007, Bradshaw split carries with Jacobs.

I expect ONE guy to be higher than Wilson on the depth chart. Bradshaw. A guy who has a history of lower leg issues and has missed 12 out of 32 starts (37.5%).

David Wilson will get on the field. We'll see what he can do.
